WORKSOP man Neil Entwistle has been found guilty of two counts of first degree murder for brutally shooting dead his wife and baby daughter.

Entwistle, 29, has waited more than two years to hear the news and could now spend the rest of his life in a state prison in Massachusetts.

As the verdict was read out Entwistle looked to his family and opened his palms and shrugged his shoulders.

Entwistle's defence team claimed in their closing speech on Monday that it was in fact Rachel who shot herself and baby Lillian Rose.

As the jury filed out of court, Entwistle's brother Russell and mother Yvonne refused to stand.

The Entwistle family was then hounded out to the lift and Cliff, a Bassetlaw district councillor, told the pack they would make a statement outside.

As Matterazzo family filed out of court many held hands and wept.

Outside court Mrs Entwistle then told the media: "We know that our son Neil is innocent and we are devastated to learn that the evidence points to Rachel murdering our grandchild and then committing suicide."

"I knew Rachel was depressed," she said.

"Our son will now go to jail for loving, honouring and protecting his wife's memory."

Mr Entwistle added: "From the moment the Matterazzo spokesman Joe Flaherty stated, and I quote, 'All we need now is the right jury pool', we knew Neil would not receive a fair trial."

"We will continue to fight for our innocent son with the hope that one day justice will prevail and our little granddaughter Lilly may rest in peace."

After speaking to press out the front of Middlesex Superior Court, Cliff, Yvonne and Russell were followed by a media pack as they calmly returned to their hotel.

Entwistle's lawyers then spoke out to criticise the jury selection process.

"I am confident the case will meet a successful view in the Supreme Court. Because of that, we cannot comment about the trial evidence and will not," he said.

"We believe that under a different environment, people selected to hear this evidence would have reached a different result."

Mr Elliot Weinstein said it had been a very sad case for both families involved.

Jurors in the month-long case heard how Entwistle stole his father-in-law's .22 calibre handgun before shooting his 27-year-old wife and nine-month-old child in the master bedroom of their Hopkinton home.

The court has heard over the past four weeks how Entwistle had spiralled into debt and depravity.

But on Monday in closing speeches Entwistle's lawyer, Elliot Weinstein, told jurors that Rachel was suffering from postnatal depression which he said was why she stole her step-father's gun and killed herself and her baby.

Mr Weinstein showed the gun to jurors while explaining the theory. He said that after the bullet went through Lilly and came to rest in Rachel's left breast, she used both hands to turn the gun on herself and fire a shot through the top of her head.

More than 20 friends and members of Rachel's family have appeared in court over the past three weeks and listened to the evidence.

They have remained silent throughout the trial.

Entwistle's family, his mum Yvonne, his father Cliff, and brother Russell have appeared at Middlesex Superior Court for every day of evidence and have not spoken out since the beginning of proceedings, when they told the media pack 'Neil is 100 per cent innocent'.

Entwistle now faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

During the course of the evidence jurors have heard the former Valley School pupil was driven to his 'tipping point' because he was in debt and jobless.

Prosecutors have always claimed that on 20th January 2006 Entwistle murdered his family before driving 50 miles to Carver to return the weapon to his father in law, Joseph Matterazzo's, house.

Mr Matterazzo, said in his evidence that he had taken Entwistle shooting at a local gun club and that he had been shown how to use the guns and knew where they were kept.

After returning and locking up the weapon, Entwistle drove to Boston's Logan International Airport before taking a one way flight back to the UK.

State police told the court they found Entwistle's white BMW at the airport's parking lot with keys to the Matterazzo home inside.

Entwistle always having been inside the Carver home and maintained his speedy exit from the US was simply because he wanted to be with his Worksop family at their Kilton home.

But in closing speeches prosecution attorney Michael Fabbri explained that on landing in the UK, Entwistle rented a Budget car and drove more than 800 miles in 36 hours before finally showing up in Worksop.

He said during that time he also rented a room at the Holiday Inn, although he did not say where.

Entwistle was eventually arrested for the crimes when he was on a train at Royal Oak tube station on 9th February 2006.

Mr Fabbri told the jurors that when he was arrested Entwistle had a clipping for escort agencies cut out from an edition of the Daily Sport. The court also heard that Entwistle had with him an A4 piece of paper with notes about his wife and baby on one side and on the other a statement saying he wanted to 'sell his story to the highest bidder'.

Jurors also heard about the secret sex life of the former computer programmer and how in the days before the murder he looked up sex swinger websites 'adultfriendfinder.com' and 'halfpriceescorts.com'.

Detective Lawrence James, a computer specialist from the City of Medford Police, gave detailed evidence about what he found when he delved into the internet history on Entwistle's Toshiba laptop.

He told jurors that someone using the computer visited the sites and three days before the murders, on 17th January 2006, did google searches for 'knife' 'in' 'neck' 'kill' and 'quick' 'suicide' 'method'.

In evidence Det James read out Entwistle's profile from the sex site.

"I am an Englishman who just moved over to the US. I am looking for one on one discreet relationships with American ladies and always aim to make all experiences ones to remember," he read.

"I am looking to meet American women of all ages," he read. "I need to confirm what friends have told me that you are much better in bed than the women over the ocean."

But in his closing speech Mr Weinstein claimed it was Rachel who had been looking up suicide methods when she became depressed after giving birth to Lillian.

Jurors took 13 hours to reach the verdict.

Entwistle was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of ammunition.

He will be sentenced tomorrow at 10am East Coast time (3pm in the UK).

I feel sorry for Enwistle's parents I really do, but they seem to be beyond deluded if they think that their shifty eyed son can be innocent in the face of all of this damning evidence.

This has been a disturbing case from start to finish but I have to say, the most disturbing image was that of Entwistle's face when the verdict was read. I've seen people look more bothered when they discover that they've made a cup of tea, only to discover that they've run out of milk.

The jury made the right decision.

If anyone was expecting the Entwistles to act respectable to the court and to give a dignified response to their son being found guilty, it did NOT happen. Quite the opposite.

Upon exiting the court, the mother told the press that Rachel committed the murder and then killed herself. She also said she KNEW for a FACT that Rachel was depressed.

Why couldn't they of just said something like "we are disappointed that Neil was found guilty" or nothing at all.

I am not concerned about the parents---they are done-stick a fork in them. Neil's younger brother though is going to have to deal with this in many ways as his adult life is just starting.

I personally feel a need to express to you British that I in no way feel anger toward you or consider that somehow you are responsible for this tragedy. I am sure that the other Americans who followed this trial feel the same way.
