Red Lion fodder is pride of Todwick

located just eight miles from Sheffield city centre is a familiar sight in the UK – a pub called The Red Lion.
But there is nothing common about what awaits the hungry punter.

My dining partner and I were pleased when we arrived at the Todwick pub, a converted barn, with all the flavour and character you could want.

The bar was packed to the rafters, and if we had not booked a table I fear they would not have been able to squeeze us in.

Once we got the attention of the barman we were led to the other side of the bar where the restaurant area opened out.

Some people appeared to be dining in the bar area and some drinkers were forced to stand, so we were pleasantly surprised to be led to a chilled out restaurant area to a more intimate table for two.

Eyeing up the menu I was spoilt for choice as there were so many dishes I longed to try. From the butternut squash and goat’s cheese lasagne to the rustic beef burger with béarnaise and rocket.

In the end I opted for the sautéed mushrooms and Cornish blue toast (£4.50), to start, followed by the smothered chicken (£8.45).

My partner was disappointed to find the duck and walnut salad was off for the evening, so instead joined me with the sautéed mushrooms which he followed up with an 8oz fillet steak (£13.45).

The starters were delicious and you felt you were getting a real treat for your money.

The sautéed Paris brown and shiitake mushrooms with cherry tomatoes and blue cheese were served up on thickly sliced fresh bread and were accompanied by a healthy portion of freshly dressed salad.

The starter was almost a meal in itself and the waiter left it a comfortable amount to time before bringing the main courses.

My smothered chicken was also a culinary delight with goats’ cheese and roasted vegetables, a large portion of peas and more buttery new potatoes than I could eat.

It was a similar story on my partner’s plate and chef had managed the perfect medium rare eight-ouncer, an art form in itself, as well as a batch of lovingly prepared chips, onion rings and more fresh salad.

Somewhat disappointingly, both of us were unable to finish the portions although not through lack of trying!

There was definitely plenty on offer at The Red Lion – all the classic pub mains.

Our total bill came to just over £43, which was very reasonable considering the number of leisurely drinks we also put away during the evening.

This is one pub definitely worth a visit, and the menu is large enough that I am confident there is something for everyone.

There are more than four main courses I’m still keen to try, plus a number of starters and puds, from chocolate torte to the brioche bread and butter pudding.

The pub, which also offers moderately priced accommodation, even has a website www.redlion-todwick.com with a full menu to tempt your tastebuds before you’ve even got in the car.

The only thing average about this establishment is its name – rest assured this isn’t any old Red Lion.
