Perfect for burgers and a cheap drink

NESTLED along Sheffield's Ecclesall Road, Champs is a student favourite and specialises in juicy American–style burgers.
Champs has a large bar area that sells a selection of beverages and tempting cocktails.
While it looks relatively unassuming from the outside, the interior is a different matter.
As a sports bar, it prides itself on having an array of sporting memorabilia festooning the walls.
From Prince Naseem Hamed’s boxing shorts to a signed Sheffield Steelers ice hockey jersey, the walls were a testimony to the careers of sporting greats from all over the world.
Like a Rock Cafe for sports fans, there were several screens erected throughout the building, screening live football matches.
On this occasion my ravenous work friends and I made our way to the restaurant area. While the bar was quite busy, the restaurant was virtually empty.
The 11 of us ordered dishes ranging from a chicken wrap and chips to vegetable fajitas complete with grated cheese, salsa and sour cream.
I went for the classic Champ burger – a six-ounce burger topped with melted cheese, bacon and barbecue sauce – and a side of onion rings, all for £7.80.
The burger was char-grilled and delicious and tasted as if it had been lovingly homemade. It was all encased in a fluffy white bun and was presented with chips and a salad garnish.
While I thought my burger was about as good as a burger could get, some of my colleagues were not as impressed.
One friend suggested that their wrap was ‘average at best’, while another said her fajitas were ‘forgettable’. And that was made all the more annoying by the embarrassing three-strorey contraption that the wraps and accompanying vegetables were presented on.
Those who ordered burgers seemed to finish their meals content, and extremely full. While others had gleefully gulped down a Champs platter of nachos, wings, skins, chicken bites and onion rings.
But murmurs of unrest came thick and fast from elsewhere. One of my colleagues was understandably perturbed when one of the waitresses accidentally spilled a drink over her, covering her in a sticky red juice on the beginning of a night out.
The waitress was very apologetic and gave my colleague her meal for free, but this did little to lighten the spirits of someone who has had their white top ruined.
Another friend said she asked a waitress for a drink on several occasions while we were dining but received nothing.
Had the restaurant been brimming with demanding customers, I could understand such an oversight, but the room was virtually empty and there were at least three staff members milling around.
Two of my work mates ordered cherry pancakes for dessert, which consisted of cherries wrapped in pancakes with vanilla ice cream, which were deemed as being ‘quite nice but uninteresting’.
Everything in consideration I actually thought that Champs was an enjoyable place to eat.
It is no fancy gourmet restaurant, that’s for sure, but for those who want a tasty, juicy burger and a cheap drink, Champs is perfect.
