AS SATISFYING as it is to eat, fish and chips is not always the most sociable of meals.
When my fellow reporters and I walked back into the office after feasting on all the culinary delights Kennys ‘Home of the finest fish and chips’ has to offer, we were met with various exclamations of, ‘you stink’, which is always nice to hear.
Many of these insults were fuelled entirely by jealousy because, let’s face it, when the chips aren’t yours, you always want one.
Kennys, situated on Netherton Road, Worksop, provides the typical chip shop experience.
The ceaseless sound of sizzling batter, the trademark blue and white chequered decor and the irresistible smell of England’s trademark meal.
Although there was a whole host of other choices on the menu, I opted for a traditional cod and chips which were very nice indeed.
The small fish was of a perfect size for a lunchtime meal and there was an ample amount of chips to fill me up.
One thing I can say about Kennys is that its cooks certainly know their way around a potato.
The chips were well done, with just the right mix of crispy and soft to keep you guessing.
Quite frankly, there is nothing I hate more than an undercooked fry so this set them off to a very good start.
The fish was also very tasty and not overwhelmed by batter as such a dish can often be.
My initial request for haddock could not be met as it had already sold out, so that must be a popular choice.
The most memorable thing about Kennys was one of the posters on the wall which stated that fish and chips is the ‘healthiest’ of all takeaway foods.
This seems like quite a strange statement to me because I don’t think that anyone, if they are honest, has put their health at the top of their agenda when walking into such an establishment.
The meal is merely potato, fish and batter, so the poster reads, and so ‘you know what you’re eating’.
This is true, but such knowledge doesn’t really make the whole thing any better. Thankfully, I see such food as a treat rather than a regular meal so I hope my heart will forgive me.
Kennys menu is very good value. I parted with £2.95 for a small fish and chips which I thought was quite reasonable.
I was slightly put out by having to pay an additional 10p for a sachet of ketchup but being called ‘darling’ as I handed over my cash helped to make up for it.
In an ideal world, after licking the final remnants of salt and vinegar from my fingers, I’d have had a nap to let my body recover from having such an unusually large quantity of food in the middle of the day but instead I remained at my desk, safe in the knowledge that it would be a good few hours before I would need to eat again.
Kennys will shortly be undergoing a refurbishment, so remember, if you’re looking to fulfil your fish and chip craving and fancy trying what Kennys has to offer, get in there before the builders do.
