End of an era at Shireoaks

THE Shireoaks Colliery Company was registered in December 1864, though the colliery itself dated back to the previous decade - the shaft having been sunk from 1854 and the first coal being reached in 1859. In May 1873 work began on sinking the shaft at a new colliery at Steetley. Both Shireoaks and Steetley were allocated to the NCB’s North East Division, No 1 Area on nationalisation in 1947. In 1967, both collieries were transferred to South Yorkshire and in 1983 the two collieries merged bringing surface working at Steetley to an end.
