Cemetery upkeep does need to improve
I WOULD like to thank Mr Dudley for his letter (4th June). Your concerns are well mirrored by District cross-party councillors who now take part on a cemetery committee following instigating a petition by Coun Bob Cross and myself. The concerns were the grass cutting and grave excavation by a JCB digger that is much too heavy.
When re-burials take place graves collapse and headstones get damaged. Two years ago we had some improvements, but were informed grass cutting including pick-up was too expensive. Unfortunately, we have slipped back into haphazard and sloppy maintenance.
Mr Dudley's letter was well timed as I had already set up a 1 to 1 discussion with the Executive Mayor and left him in no doubt of the requirement to improve the situation. His reaction was positive. We had to be realistic and accept that our precious graves do sink from time to time, therefore greater care and sensibility should be shown.
I personally visit close family graves twice a week, so it is close to my heart.
Obviously there is a need for greater resources. Maybe we could benefit from the 12,000 saved from the closure of the St John Street public toilets to enhance the cemetery, the final resting place of our loved ones.
