Famous son arrives by train
Worksop's MP Malcolm Macdonald arrives at Worksop train station to present the Charter of Incorporation to the town on Thursday 31st October 1931
OUR picture last week of staff at Burgess Flour Mill in Worksop brought back memories for one reader.
Judith Creasey, of Larwood, spotted her dad Gordon Hughes on the right of the second row, standing with his head turned towards the women at his side.
He worked at the mill for many years until it closed and would have been in his early 20s when the picture was taken.
Judith, who grew up on Rufford Street, said: “He used to fill the flour sacks and really enjoyed working there. He took me with him one day when I wasn’t at school. I remember there were always lots of wild cats around the place.”
This week’s photo is from 1931 and was taken at Worksop train station.
It shows Bassetlaw MP Malcolm MacDonald arriving to present the Charter of Incorporation to the town on 31st October. Malcolm was the son of Ramsay MacDonald, the first Labour Prime Minister.
He led a Labour government in 1924, again from 1929 to 1931, and then a National Government, with representatives drawn from all political parties, from 1931 to 1935.
His first government, formed with Liberal support, lasted just nine months. Malcolm was first elected as Bassetlaw MP in the 1929 general election. He later joined the National Government and as a consequence was expelled from the Labour party.
