Computer phone scam warning
Guardian News
WORKSOP web-surfers are being warned to remain vigilant as a computer scam sweeps the area.
The bogus scam has been noted around the country - but has recently been reported in and around Worksop.
Worksop IT consultant Chris Guest said: “I have customers all around Aston, Retford and Worksop and I’ve had a number of people calling and saying that they’ve been targeted.”
“You get a cold-call out of the blue from people claiming to be from Microsoft and they say that they are monitoring a virus on your computer. They then try to convince you to let them remotely control your computer so they can clean up the problems.”
He continued: “Once they are done, they ask for your credit card details and £150 - £200.”

Sunday, February 26, 2012 at 01:13 AMGlad you brought this up. I didn't think I'd get a call like that but I did. It came from 206-456-0661 and the man had this think middle eastern accent. So he talked about Microsoft getting alerts about a virus on my PC and that he had to remove it right away so it wouldn't crash my system down. Had I not read about the scam prior to the call, I might have fallen victim to the trick. But I knew better and hung up. I alerted the police about the scam call and reported the phone number at www.callercenter.com to raise a warning.
