In May 1873 work began on sinking the shaft at a new colliery at Steetley. Both Shireoaks and Steetley were allocated to the NCB’s North East Division, No 1 Area on nationalisation in 1947. In 1967, both collieries were transferred to South Yorkshire and in 1983 the two collieries merged bringing surface working at Steetley to an end.
