A SUTTON man who rang police and threatened to shoot his sister's ex-boyfriend has been handed a suspended jail term.
Stephen Marriott (42), of Meden Crescent, rang police on 14th March and said he was going to kill someone.
"I need some help mate, please," he said in the 999 call.
Marriott then drove to the workplace of his sister's former boyfriend Alan Bedford.
Nottingham Crown Court was told he asked a work colleague if Mr Bedford was employed there and said: "I am going to shoot him.
"Look at my face, look at my vehicle. The police are after me."
Prosecutor Gareth Gimson said the workmate then looked in the car and saw an air rifle.
The incident went no further and police later recovered the potentially lethal weapon from Marriott's home.
The breakdown between his sister and Mr Bedford had been acrimonious.
Marriott's barrister Errol Ballentyne said: "He knows that in a civilised society one cannot act in this way, even if the victim of the offence has been acting in a thoroughly uncivilised manner."
Judge Jonathan Teare said he dealt with the case as 'a moment of madness'.
Marriott, who admitted having a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, was sentenced to 45 weeks in jail, suspended for 18 months with 160 hours unpaid community work to complete.
