A FED-UP Teversal businessman is urging council chiefs to get tough on lazy fly-tippers dumping rubbish throughout the village.
The Pleasley Road resident, who does not want to be named, says lorry loads of waste are being left on Teversal's country roads, as well as in neighbouring Skegby and Pleasley.
In the latest incident last Tuesday, traffic was brought to a stand still on Baxter Hill after a pile of rubbish was left strewn across the road creating long delays for motorists.
"Drivers were having to get out of their cars to try and clear the road and this type of thing is happening more and more over the past year," he said.
"Fly-tippers are chucking all sorts or refuse –– straw, plastic boxes, cans, bottles, batteries as well as toxic stuff –– it is absolutely filthy and there is a lot of frustration from local residents who are having to put up with it.
"Vans and lorries are coming in late at night, about 10pm or 11pm, usually on Sunday nights, and dumping loads when nobody is around"
Common dumping grounds for the waste include Buttery Lane and Dawgates Lane in Skegby and Baxter Hill and Norwood Lane in Teversal.
The man says the recent economic downturn has contributed to the problem with folk willing to pay rogue refuse collectors to get rid of their waste.
"It is costing the ratepayers a lot of money and people need to be aware that these fly-tippers are offering a service to save people money but just dumping it anywhere and saving themselves hundreds of pounds," he said.
"It is up to the public to take the registration numbers of those responsible and report them to the authorities immediately –– these people are a law unto themselves.
"I'd like to see Ashfield District Council sort this problem out and provide more waste disposal facilities so people are not tempted to dump it elsewhere –– other councils have set up cameras in problem areas and we should do this too."
